Boone County is the largest county in the state to pass such an ordinance, and the first in Northern Kentucky.
The ordinance allows individuals to choose not to join a union and pay dues without being penalized or losing their jobs. The new ordinance would apply to labor contracts and re-negotiations effective after the date of adoption, but not to those already in existence at the time of adoption.
Boone County Judge-Executive Gary Moore said that his county started exploring the possibility of adopting a local right-to-work ordinance in the following days after the state House of Representatives defeated statewide right-to-work legislation in their chamber.
“It was in the following days that we took a look at what some of the other counties in the commonwealth have done and that is to pass a county right-to-work ordinance,” Moore said. “Our intent is really about one thing, and that is to have more opportunities to attract businesses to our county.”
“We hear from economic development consultants about half of the projects that are being worked across the country want to be in right-to-work communities,” he said. “So, another way of saying it is, for every opportunity out there, we’re missing half of them if we’re not right-to-work.”
